Donielle’s Black Bean Brownies


I tried Donielle from Naturally Knocked Up’s black bean brownies. Yummy guiltless chocolate, and they passed the kid and husband test as well :) The only substitutions I made were I didn’t use bittersweet baking chocolate, but instead I increased the cocoa to 6 tablespoons and the butter to 1/2 a cup.

GAPS notes: Black beans and cocoa are technically GAPS illegal, but I think they’re ‘borderline advanced’ foods and are okay for some.  Whipping cream is not GAPS legal at all, sorry.
Other notes: One pound of black beans, soaked and cooked, yields exactly 3 batches (6 cups). I did my first batch in an 8×8 glass pan, then the second and third together in a 9×13.  Less dishes, and a stockpile in the freezer- win win!  Great served with whipping cream (sweetened with honey, and melting because the brownie is still warm. yum.)

    We make black bean brownies all the time. It is our new go-to for birthdays. we serve it with homemade raw milk ice cream. YUMMY!

    Although, we just had a taste of Costco cake at a gathering and I think I might just be a very bad girl and get a Costco cake for my birthday in August . . . hey, it's been two years of eating black bean brownies!!

    I am a new subscriber, and am a bit confused about finding recipes on your site. For example, this brownie recipe has the labels "dessert" and "GAPS". When I searched for a "dessert" label in your header at the top of your webpage, there is no "dessert" label to click on. This will make it hard to find the recipe in the future (I wouldn't normally think to look under "GAPS"). It is confusing and hard to locate articles or recipes if the labels don't match. I hope this makes sense. I also couln't find a "contact" link to email you about this, thus why I posted a comment instead. I appreciate your wonderful blog, and hope you do not take offense. :) Thank you!

    I made an unhealthy version (box of brownie mis and a can of beans) of these a few years ago and was surprised by how compatible the flavors were! Going to have to give the real food version a try! :)

  9. I wonder if these brownies could be made with navy beans instead to make it GAPS legal? The cocoa is legal on the full diet in the absence of any digestive issues.
