With changing seasons, I’m always excited about new food! Not new for us, but we’ve been making butternut squash soup often already this fall. Put in the crock pot in the morning, you’re free to enjoy these beautiful days and still come home to a warm meal.
Here are some other things I’m going to be cooking (and reading) this fall
- Kat has SCD pumpkin pie that I know will be a hit in this house! I have a couple friends who have been boasting of lots of beautiful pumpkins in their back yards this year, so I’m hoping for plenty for pies! I love how this recipe has an option for raw as pudding or cooked as custard/pie.
- Lettuce wraps look like something fresh and light for the day after a heavy holiday meal.
- Soups are always warm, nourishing and filling as is this Potato Leek Soup from Nourished Kitchen. I usually let them cook in my crock pot on days when I know I’ll be busy, so we come home to a hot meal ready to serve. I wonder if people who are grain/starch/sugar free could substitute kefir or yogurt for the whole milk, and cauliflower for the potatoes? I’ll have to try it and let you know.
- I bought figs the other day, but didn’t know quite what to do with them. These roasted figs sound amazing- and they’re a great grain free dessert option. Another grain free goodie- bacon wrapped dates sound so fun to try! I have nitrate free beef bacon that I’m going to use, with dates that can be found inexpensively in the bulk bin of my health food store.
- Ever wondered how to make homemade vinegar? I’m really excited about this, it looks so easy! I have one more batch of apple butter to do, so I’ll use the cores from that to make apple vinegar.
A natural remedy: I’ve written about oil pulling before, but go visit The Nourished Life’s post as well for more information on oil pulling. It’s always educational to get different perspectives, and this is a fantastic inexpensive natural treatment for a variety of conditions.
An educational opportunity: The Real Food Nutrition and Health E-course is a real food online class especially for children 12 and up- What are your children learning about nutrition? How would it have helped you to have learned about what really is healthy food vs the popular myths of your time when you were a teenager? I encourage all parents of teens to consider rounding out their education with this class on the importance of what we eat!
