This eye makeup remover is just what I needed. Prior to making this I would always think twice before applying mascara because it was such a pain to get off! I didn’t want to use petroleum based products sold over the counter, since I don’t want my skin absorbing those toxic ingredients. And the natural stuff at the health food store was so pricey that I didn’t want to take the chance that it might not work.
I saw this cheap and easy recipe when looking through Mommypotamus’ DIY Organic Beauty e-book and tried it right away. Chances are you have the ingredients needed on hand too! It’s just witch hazel and olive oil.
Ingredients for Simple Natural Makeup Remover
- 2 ounces witch hazel (found in the pharmacy section of most health food or drug stores)
- 2 ounces olive oil
Directions for Simple Natural Makeup Remover
Combine the two ingredients in a clean glass bottle with a lid. Shake gently to combine before using. To use, dab a bit on a cotton wash cloth or cotton ball, wipe over eyes, and then wipe again with a clean cotton ball or dry part of the wash cloth.

I am just curious what kind of mascara do you use? I can’t find one that does not flake off by the
middle of the day leaving black stuff under my eyes.
I use waterproof, it’s not natural- I have Neutrogena and one by Sephora. I use natural for everything else, but yeah, I never really got the hang of natural mascera
Hi, what are your thoughts on using coconut oil instead of olive oil? Does the olive oil work better or could you use either one?
Coconut oil would only work if you live in a really warm climate I think, since in most areas it would be solid.
Good point! Thanks!
If you simply scoop a little coconut oil out of the container, ( I keep a old demitasse spoon, even when it is solid, hold in your hands for a minute, it will melt. It is SO good for your skin, it’s worth the little extra step. It is the only thing I use on my skin and I’m a licensed esthetician. It melts mascara right off.
I use coconut oil on my whole face & it takes off my waterproof mascara at the same time. I have a jar in my bathroom just for body use. Put a bit on my fingers and the heat of my hands melts it as I rub it all over my face. Use hot water on a wash cloth to wash it off my face. Works!
Didn’t see your post until after I posted mine, LOL. I do the same – it is a great cleanser. In the morning, after cleansing, I leave the coconut oil on, applied to damp skin, until I am ready to apply makeup, then blot with a damp cloth. Soft skin!
Duh! Coconut oil melts on contact.
Real Purity makes a wonderful natural mascara! No flaking and smearing when I use it.
Oo, I”ll have to try that when one of mine runs out. Is it waterproof?
That’s what I’d like to know too. I need waterproof, since I never know when I’ll feel the need to shed a tear (cutting onions, if someone says something touching, if I read a moving news article, etc.)! :-)
Thanks for the recommendation! I just bought some on amazon. I’ve tried other natural mascara options and have been disappointed so I was back to my usual lancome. I feel lame using it though because almost everything else I use is completely natural. So hopefully this one works!
I don’t think it is waterproof. Sorry! But it does last nice and I just use evening primrose oil to remove it.
That’s ok :) It’s good to know good natural alternatives :)
The witch hazel doesn’t sting the eyes? I already use almond or sesame oil to take off makeup but I’d love to try this. I wear eyeliner so the product gets very close to my eyes for makeup removal.
I love that I found this. I needed something natural to take off my makeup…even though I rarely use any.

Strangely–Aloe Vera Gel works like a charm! Not oily and actually moisturizes skin without leaving much of a residue. Sold at CVS in a big container for $5.
Witch hazel only will remove your make up! Plus it serves as toner as well….
Hi I was wondering how long you can store this for?
